There has been an article already posted about whether students spend too much time in school or not. Many schools are different and end at different times. Usually, school dismissal times are based on start times, but one thing that I think is weird is that DC Tech ends at 2:55, compared to 2:30 like other schools. Why? What makes us so special that we end later than other schools?
The extra 25 minutes can help students in the long run. They get more time in their program of study, which most kids in other schools don’t have the opportunity to be in, and they get extra time in school to learn everything that they need to know for the future. This extra time can most likely get them ready for the workforce where they are most likely going to work long hours with only one break, so they are going to need to get used to these long hours if they plan on working for their program of study in the real world. DC Tech is determined to prepare students to go right into the workforce or college after they graduate high school where other schools might not give kids these opportunities which should give DC Tech the right to keep the students in longer.
DC Tech doesn’t really start later than other schools so why do they end later? I get it may have a long term effect on students in the future, but do students really need the extra 25 minutes? This extra time may also affect students with their lives outside of school but in a negative way. Some students may have work which may cause them to be late not only because school ends late, but because they may need to wait extra time because of the parking lot pick up situation. Some students live in Halifax which means they will take nearly an hour to get home from school. Some students do after school activities with their home schools like sports and other things, and just like a boss at work, coaches aren’t the biggest fans of their players showing up late to practices which may cause those students getting kicked off the team, or it may cause them playing time during the games. One of my experiences, I went to go to get ready for the game, where I had to be at my home school at 3, an hour before we left to get on the bus, and because of the time school ended, I was late to that, and the bus driver was confused about where to go so me and other students ended up getting to their practices and stuff late and I almost missed the bus to leave the school to go to the away game.
